Amazon and its subsidiary, Twitch, are being sued for patent infringement over their use of streaming technology

An Israeli company, B.S.D Crown Ltd (formerly known as Emblaze Ltd), has filed a lawsuit in a San Francisco federal court against Amazon and its live-streaming subsidiary, Twitch, alleging that their video technology infringes on one of the company's patents. The patent in question relates to adjusting the quality of live-streaming audio and video based on changing bandwidth availability.

Emblaze previously sued Apple and Microsoft for patent infringement, but the dispute with Microsoft was dropped in 2015 and a California jury ruled in favor of Apple in 2014.

BSD claims that Emblaze, which was founded in 1994, innovated streaming technology that now "powers the majority of live broadcasts." The company alleges that Amazon's technology for adapting the video quality of live sports streams, such as NFL games, and Twitch live streams, infringes on its patent. Amazon acquired Twitch for $970 million in 2014.

BSD is seeking an unspecified amount of damages from Amazon. The case is BSD Crown Ltd v. Amazon.com Inc, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, with the case number 3:23-cv-00057. Francisco Villegas and Mark Halderman of Armstrong Teasdale are representing BSD, while Amazon's attorney has not been identified.
